Parent Session - Dr Judith Locke

Building Confident & Capable Kids

16 July & 17 July

We are delighted to welcome Dr Judith Locke, clinical psychologist, parenting expert, and author of The Bonsai Child and Raising Anxiety, to speak with our parent community.

Dr Locke specialises in practical, research-backed strategies that help children become more confident, resilient, and independent. Drawing on her extensive experience with families and schools, Dr Locke will share insights into:

  • Encouraging healthy independence in children
  • Setting effective boundaries and routines
  • Managing anxiety and building resilience
  • Fostering motivation, responsibility, and problem-solving skills
  • Practical advice about topics such as navigating homework and managing the busy morning routine.

Dr Locke’s advice is engaging and highly actionable—offering reassurance and tools for parents navigating the challenges of raising children in today’s world.

We invite all parents to attend these valuable sessions and learn how to support your children in becoming capable, adaptable, and confident young people.

Child minding will be available on both nights, with fun and supervised activities. On the first night, children can enjoy a Junior School disco and movie, while the second night will feature a relaxed movie session. Snacks and drinks will be provided each evening. Please use this Trybooking link to register yourself and your children.

Head of School, Dino Arraiol

Dear Parents and Carers

We would like to wish all our students and families a refreshing and safe winter break. At assembly this week, we encouraged students to spend some time recharging over the holiday break and to find some activities to participate in beyond screen time.

As school report cards are released this coming Monday, we would ask our families to engage with this information (and help guides to find reports on the Calvary App are attached to this communication). This is a good time to celebrate something at school that your child has done well at or has been involved in, and to plan some goals for improvement over the coming semester. Please make sure you both encourage your child and provide them with some reflection on improvement as you read their report card with them. Parent Teacher Student interviews are also early in Term 3 and the report card will provide a teacher indication on whether it would be beneficial for you and your child to meet with them next term.

In addition to these events, we will be running a BBQ to support our students travelling to the Philippines on a Mission Trip this October. We encourage you to support this worthy cause by allowing your child to purchase food and drinks on the day. Let me take the time to wish all our families and community a wonderful winter break. May you find rest, joy, and meaningful time together with loved ones during the holidays.

Term 3 Important Dates:

  • Please be aware that Monday 14 July 2025 is a pupil-free day.
  • The first day of Term 3 for students will be Tuesday 15 July 2025.

  • Teacher Parent Interviews are scheduled for Wednesday 23 July 2025 (booking will open in the last week of the school holidays)

House Leader Recognition

Earlier in the year, a number of students expressed interest in becoming House Leaders after the roles had already been filled. Despite not having official titles, these students have demonstrated outstanding commitment by serving faithfully throughout Semester 1. In recognition of their dedication, they have now been awarded their House Leader badges—reflecting our belief that true leadership is shown through action, not position.

House Leaders:

  • Eli Vidins
  • Hamish Wann
  • Elyana Stevens
  • Charlotte Forward

Report Card Updates - Semester 1, 2025

We are making several changes to our MSS Report Cards to improve clarity and formatting of these documents. These changes include:

  • Learning Habits will now be found in one central place, at the start of the report, and not in piecemeal throughout the document.
  • Elective units and single period subjects will now provide a competency-based outcome (Achieved / Not Achieved).
  • All subjects will issue an Effort and Conduct result. The Effort and Conduct criteria has been provided as an attachment below.
  • A range of formatting changes have been made to improve the presentation of the Middle and Senior School reports.

Semester 1 Report Cards will be accessible online from the beginning of the holiday break. Semester 2 Parent Teacher Interview opportunities will also be available for booking from that time.

Book Drive Success – Thank You!

After the recent damage to Springwood campus, we were unable to access our library books—but thanks to the overwhelming generosity of our community, our travelling library has been up and running, and children have already been enjoying the joy of borrowing books once again! Across both campuses, over 2,500 books were donated through our Book Drive. Thank You! This means our students can continue to escape into the adventure of a good book throughout this term and into the holidays.

A special thank you to Sarah Cosgriff and Alison Stone for championing this initiative and making it all possible.

Thank you again for being such a generous and supportive community!

MSS Athletics Carnival

Please find attached below the information about the MSS Athletics Carnival, which will be held in Week 2 of Term 3.

If students consider themselves to be a District-level athlete and would like to attend the below trials, please respond to Mr Paech via email with the events that your student would like to compete in. As a guide, if you would normally win, or come a very close second, in any events at school level, then you could reasonably assume that you would be competitive at District level. If you are not sure, come and have a chat with Mr Paech. He has the results from the 2024 trials which can be considered.

The events to be trialled are as follows:

TRACK: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m/5000m

JUMPS: Long Jump, Triple Jump, High Jump

THROWS: Discus, Javelin, Shot Put
