The Rite Journey: Marking the Transition to Adulthood
12 March 2026
Think back to your own life for a moment. Can you remember a clear moment when you could say you had graduated from childhood into adulthood?
For many of us, that moment is difficult to pinpoint. In modern Western society, we often lack meaningful rites of passage that clearly mark the transition from childhood to adulthood. In many cultures around the world, however, this transition is marked intentionally through significant ceremonies or challenges—such as the Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah in Jewish culture, coming-of-age endurance ceremonies among the Maasai people, or the celebration of a young woman’s fifteenth birthday in the Quinceañera in many Latin American communities.
Moments like these matter because they mark an important psychological shift. Childhood is often characterised by a child-centred psychology—a stage where life understandably revolves around one’s own needs and experiences. Adulthood, however, requires a different mindset: an other-centred psychology, where responsibility, service, and care for others become central.
Recognising the importance of this transition is why our Year 9 Formation team has introduced The Rite Journey.

Why This Program Matters
Today’s young people are growing up in a rapidly changing world. The influence of technology, social media, and increasingly protective parenting has meant that many adolescents have fewer opportunities to develop independence or to experience the challenges that build resilience. As a result, many young people can feel less equipped to deal with difficulty, disappointment, and responsibility.
The Rite Journey aims to address this by intentionally guiding students through experiences that foster maturity and independence.
Central to the program are the Seven C’s, which students are encouraged to develop throughout the year:
- Courage – facing fears and adversity
- Compassion – developing empathy and care for others
- Commitment – persevering when things are difficult
- Collaboration - working together to achieve a goal
- Consideration - listening to other people's views and opinions
- Connection - building meaningful relationships
- Camp - participating in the Chinchilla Service Trip

Through these experiences, students begin to develop the skills and mindset needed to move toward adulthood with confidence and character.
The Journey So Far
On camp earlier this year, our Year 9 students began this journey by reflecting on their childhood, their family experiences, and the people who have shaped them. They were encouraged to think deeply about the values they want to carry with them into adulthood.

One particularly meaningful moment involved students preparing a meal for their parents or caregivers as an expression of gratitude for everything that has been done for them. It was a simple but powerful opportunity to pause, reflect, and acknowledge the support they have received throughout their childhood.
What Lies Ahead
As the year progresses, students will continue their journey through a range of significant experiences. These include:
- Completing a Solo Challenge, where students spend time in quiet reflection
- Spending time with a mentor, learning from the wisdom of a trusted adult
- Participating in a service experience culminating in our trip to Chinchilla, where students will engage in meaningful service and community work
Each stage of the program is designed to help students grow in resilience, independence, and self-awareness. Our desire is to prepare the child for the road, not the road for the child.

A Journey of Faith and Character
Above all, The Rite Journey is not simply about personal development. It is also about helping students reflect on who they are in relationship with God.
As they move through this important stage of life, our hope and prayer is that students will grow in their understanding of who they are, what they value, and who God is calling them to become.

We pray that The Rite Journey will be an exciting opportunity for growth and transformation, as our Year 9 students continue discovering their identity, their purpose, and their place in the world.
