Dear Parents and Carers

Continuing my previous discussions on home learning, this week I would like to reflect on helping teenagers have accountability around their study practices. Studying is hard and takes sustained effort and discipline, and without accountability most people (adults included) would live forever in procrastination land. By the way, laptops and smart phones can be incredibly helpful tools in helping us look busy while prolonging our procrastination!

Here are some simple tricks I think parents of teenagers can use to help keep students accountable:

  • Buy a cheap white board ($5-15 from Kmart) and stick it the wall of your teenager’s room. Get them to  write down all their due dates (or key events) for the term in order. When they tell you they have nothing to do, look at the board and ask them to show you their progress on the next assessment that is due.
  • If ‘working’ involves staring intently at a laptop for long periods of time, ask students to show you what they have written/noted in a set timeframe. If you think nothing is being done, give them an opportunity to print off materials and then make them handwrite a response. I am always surprised about how quickly work appears when the laptop disappears!
  • Thoughtfully review your child’s report card. Our Learning Habits indicate clearly the level of effort children are putting into their subject. Make sure you understand how the marking criteria works (the link with an explanation is always provided) and speak to your child about it. Particularly, you should speak to your child about their self score on the Learning Habits – if they are indicating that they are not working effectively some family assistance may be needed.
  • Easiest (but sometimes the hardest one) – no screens until home learning is done.

Yours sincerely

Reggie Dabbs Presentation

Next week Thursday 1 June we are fortunate to have Reggie Dabbs an international speaker present to our Year 10 - 12 students on the topic of resilience and owning your choices. For more than 20 years Reggie has spoken to many students in Australian Schools. Reggie's unique blend of humour, music (he plays saxophone professionally) and an incredible personal story of perseverance gets students to seriously think about the decisions they make. We hope that Reggie helps our students learn that “You can’t change your past but you can change your future”.

From The Carbrook Farm

Farmer H and the Ag team are preparing Lamb Cuddle sessions this Sunday between 2pm and 4pm. We are so excited to introduce our new Calvary additions.

Middle School Fundraising

As part of our mission to teach our students the art and practice of giving to those less fortunate the Middle School are fundraising for Fishers of Men and Drought Angels to provide hygeine care packs for the communities that they support. The list below provides details of the products that these organisations would appreciate our Calvary community collecting for them:

• roll on deodorant
• soap
• wet wipes
• tissues
• toothbrush
• toothpaste
• hairbrush or comb
• nail clippers
• lip balm
• disposable shaver
• shampoo or body wash
• body lotion

Our Middle school students will be collecting these items from Prep to Year 12 classes for the rest of this term and into next term. Any support from our wonderful community to support those less fortunate would be greatly appreciated.
